The main aspect of ALS House Language Teaching Labs is that they not only provide the opportunities to think about, discuss, and address real issues in language teaching but also it helps to develop skills and attitude of teachers and their students.  We wish to give the opportunities  to perform hands-on practical trainings, or conducting experiments with ideas in groups by observing and manipulating the theoretical knowledge  to develop the  understanding and appreciation.  By doing experiment or hands on practice our TL attendees can relate and reinforce the theoretical concepts taught in class by themselves during class activities. Without it the theoretical knowledge has no meaning. In our LTLs more emphasis are given on how to conduct classes and how to evaluate the student’s performance.

Lesson Planning

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

... lesson planning is considered evidence of being developed professionally?

Scrivener (2011) suggests that lesson planning is a thinking skill and helps to be clear about what you want to do – planning increases the number of your options – and doing so, increases your chances of a successful lesson.

Planning means imagining the lesson before it happens: it involves prediction, anticipation, sequencing, organising and simplifying. A written plan is evidence that you have done that thinking.

THE CINDERELLA OF TEACHING

Writing sometimes shifts to the bottom of the teacher's priorities and more often than not becomes "the Cinderella" of teaching. Speaking activities are considered more engaging, coursebooks often relegate writing to workbooks and give it an incidental role, some teachers think that writing takes up too much valuable time in class. Correcting written work is an additional burden for the teacher. However, it is a vital skill and an important consolidation tool. In this session we will look at different ways of giving it a more central role in one's teaching and making it more student oriented.

Teaching pronunciation as

a class activity

Teaching pronunciation presents several challenges and sets unrealistic and often frustrating goals.

The presenter emphasises the role of interactive pronunciation practice in class activities, aiming to provide practical ideas and setting realistic aims when discussing

  • The role of pronunciation and what we should prioritise

  • Pronunciation as an interactive skill

  • Pronunciation for listening and decoding

While pre-service teacher training might focus more on pronunciation in lesson staging than as a subskill, course books focus on neat pronunciation bits that often lack help decoding the connected speech, so learners fail to get equipped with key pronunciation skills they could benefit from in real life.
